Finding balance – alternate nostril breathing

Alternate nostril breathing; it sounds odd, but it’s an easy and effective breathing control practice to help bring balance back to body and mind.

BENEFITS:

  • Calms the mind
  • Helps with anxiety
  • Brings balance to the left and right hemispheres of the brain
  • Brings about energetic balance and a sense of relaxation

HOW TO:

Make the Hawaiian Shaka (hang loose) shape with your right hand. Use the thumb when you cover the right nostril and the little finger for the left nostril. The three middle fingers are loosely curled into the palm as you cycle through the breathing practice.

Cover the right nostril, breathe in through the left nostril, uncover the right nostril and cover the left, breath out and then in through the right nostril, then cover the right nostril and breath out through the left. This is one cycle. Breathe evenly and calmly without forcing the breath. Repeat the cycle for 5 minutes.
